The Umkomaas valley is free range hunting at its best, record book Southern Greater Kudu, Nyala, Bushbuck and most the common species in their native habitat all free range and out of one camp.
The Umkomaas is a unique area in that you can hunt Southern Kudu, Nyala and Cape Bushbuck in their indigenous environment and unfenced. The Umkomaas in the Natal Midlands is a 100 000 acre conservancy that offers very good and challenging hunting in thick bush for all the spiral horned species as well as a number of the more common plains game species. Low hunting pressure, good genetics, food and age class all contribute to making this area famous for giant Kudu, Nyala and Bushbuck. Common Reedbuck, Impala, Eland, Waterbuck, Oribi and Blue Wildebeest offer variety to the hunting.
The undulating terrain and thick bush making patient glassing followed by a well planned stalk the most effective means of hunting. The conservancy is a short 1.5-hour drive from Durban's King Shaka airport. Early in the year the animals are in the rut and later in the year the visibility improves, given enough time this area always produces great trophies, we hunt from March to November.
The Umkomaas valley conservancy is privately owned, we set our own quota and manage the area in the interests of maintaining the trophy quality that the area is known for. As with the Baviaansriver and Stormberg areas Crusader Safaris owns a large portion of land and has two camps in the Umkomaas Valley.
In the Umkomaas we hunt out of our classic tented camp, situated on the banks of the Mkobeni and Umkomaas rivers this luxurious camp has the atmosphere and feel of true Africa. The Umkomaas is 1.5 hours south of Durban’s King Shaka international airport. There are 4 en suite tented cabins with indoor and outdoor showers, permanent electricity, heaters and electric blankets.
Sightings of Nyala, Bushbuck, Zebra, Impala and Wildebeest occur often and the area around camp is known to have some of the best bird life in Southern Africa. The sounds of Africa after dark are always enjoyable around the fire.
Internet access and telephone service is available in camp. As with all our camps we use game meat hunted on safari, prepared in African style and served with refreshments of your choice. At Crusader Safaris we have a reputation as the only free range hunting outfit in South Africa but there is no doubt that the camps and hospitality will far exceed your expectations.
All our camps are owned by Crusader Safaris. With the unpredictable nature of hunting we like to keep safaris relatively flexible. As we own the camps this is possible and there is never pressure to move to another camp, hunters move at their leisure and as the hunting dictates.
