Monster Vaal rhebuck, plains game and bird hunting. The Stormberg mountains are a unique area at 5000 feet above sea level and a great hunting experience.

Stormberg Mountains

At 5000 feet above sea level, the Stormberg mountains have the best Vaal Rhebuck in all of Africa. The Vaal Rhebuck has become a speciality animal for Crusader Safaris and we have taken numerous record book animals over the years. The area is wide open grasslands and supports very good numbers and quality of Black Wildebeest, Blesbuck, Red Hartebeest and Springbuck. Due to the wide open nature of the country shots of 200 to 250 yards are not uncommon.

The animals making these mountains home are herd animals and can be hunted all day as they do not restrict their movement to the early mornings and evenings. With the visibility being good and the country open, a flat long shooting rifle is a good choice. Hunting in the Stormberg is best from March in the fall months through our winter months when it gets really cold through to November.

The Stormberg has some really good bird hunting in our winter months. From the end of May to the end of August hunting for Greywing Partridge and a variety of Ducks and Geese is always popular. An afternoon or morning shoot as part of a big game hunt or a few days dedicated to chasing the different species of bird and challenges can be organised on request.

Stormberg Lodge

The Stormberg lodge is a comfortable safari style home, built in the 1800’s it has all the luxuries appreciated after a long day hunting the rugged mountains. Situated high up in the Stormberg at 6000 ft this area occasionally gets snow falls in winter. Permanent heaters, log fires and quality service ensure a comfortable stay while hunting birds, Vaal Rhebuck and the other plains game species of the Stormberg.

Electricity is 220v and there is telephone service and internet available. The Stormberg Lodge is well situated between the Umkomaas camp and the Baviaansriver lodge. It is an easy 2 hours drive from the Baviaans and 5 hours from the Umkomaas. Often a good stop over between the two main areas.

When planning to hunt the Stormberg always take additional warm gear. A good spotting scope and long shooting rifle is also a good idea in the mountains.

Typically while hunting the Stormberg hunters will enjoy a good breakfast before heading out. As the plains game of this sparsely vegetated mountain area can be hunted all day it is not uncommon to take a packed lunch and make the most of the hunting opportunities of the Stormberg.
